Hiking Gunung Kawi: 7 Trails, the Viral 'Istigfar' Climb, and the Facts Behind the Myth
Gunung Kawi, on the border of Malang and Blitar in East Java, went viral again in 2026 — not for its pesugihan (wealth) myth, but for its genuinely challenging hiking trails. At 2,551 metres above sea level (the Batu Tulis summit reaches about 2,603 masl), the mountain nicknamed the "Sleeping Princess Mountain" proves that the elevation number isn't everything.
Why Did Gunung Kawi Go Viral Again in 2026?
The buzz centres on the "Tanjakan Istigfar" — a steep stretch of climb that has left many hikers throwing in the towel even though the summit is "only" 2,603 masl. Videos of exhausted hikers struggling up this slope spread widely and cemented Gunung Kawi's reputation as a hike not to be underestimated.
On the other hand, Gunung Kawi is also often linked to the pesugihan myth. In reality, the area has two faces: pilgrimage and spiritual sites on the lower slopes, and a nature hiking trail that is purely about adventure. For hikers, Gunung Kawi is about pine forests, tea plantations, and sunrise from altitude — not anything mystical.
The 7 Hiking Trails of Gunung Kawi
- Precet Trail — the most popular, roughly 6–8 hours to the summit.
- Keraton Trail — longer (10–12 hours), rich in history and spiritual atmosphere.
- Ngantang Trail — the safest, with low risk, around ±12 hours, ideal for beginners.
- Panderman / Butak Trail — approached via the city of Batu.
- Kucur (Dau) Trail — a different experience from the Malang side.
- Blitar (Sirah Kencong) Trail — iconic tea plantation views.
- Kongko Trail — the trail we use from the Gacor basecamp in Balesari, Ngajum (±800 masl).
Tickets and Preparation
The entry fee for the official trails is very affordable, around IDR 20,000 per hiker. Cheap as it is, don't take preparation lightly: bring enough water (Pos 3 at ~2,400 masl is spacious but has no water source), a warm jacket, and shoes with good grip for steep terrain like the Tanjakan Istigfar.
